There were plenty of big automotive stories last month, but the new vehicle that made the biggest splash was undoubtedly the all-new Ford Bronco. Based heavily on the aesthetic of the classic 1960s original, the all-new Bronco is set to be available in three model configurations, each taking aim at a different, iconic competitor (read: Jeep) in the ultra-profitable sport-utility segment. And, neat-looking as the new Bronco is, it’s hardly innovative. Sure, there’s some neat sensor tech involved, but there is no hybrid or electric Ford Bronco, no direct-to-wheel torque modulation, and no real “market moon shot,” in other words. Except, arguably, the styling — the new Bronco looks great, but how does it stand up to the original?

As ever, there are the classics on one hand, and the imitations on the other. Zero Labs’ Bronco? It takes a meticulously restored original Bronco body and drops it on a state of the art “skateboard” built around your choice of an 85 or 100 kWh battery with up to 235 miles of range. Independent front and rear suspension systems built around top-shelf adjustable air shocks from Fox Racing offer a blend of superior on-road comfort and ultimate off-road performance. Dual electric motors mounted front and rear deliver more than 600 HP and jaw-dropping levels of torque off the line, which is not only a lot more than the “official” 2021 Ford Bronco, but nearly 500% more power than the classic 1966 original.

This isn’t so much the Ford Bronco we got from the OEM, or the “classic car” as we remember it — those of us with enough gray hairs on our heads, anyway. Instead, this is the electric Ford Bronco as it could and should be. The clean, uncluttered lines of the original mated with a clean, forward-looking power train that delivers genuine thrills both on and off the street. And it’s topped off by a gorgeous interior that is somehow both vintage and future-iffic.

Had I not mentioned the car’s interior, yet? That’s where the Zero Labs Bronco really comes into its own. Everywhere you look, your eyes are greeted with brushed aluminum and light wood artfully arranged in a way that would make George Jetson beam with pride for having inspired it. From the steering wheel to the “shifters” to the door panels, everything is as Henry, Lee, and God intended.

If it sound like I’m a bit overly smitten with Zero Labs’ electric Ford Bronco, that’s because I am. It’s not a healthy level of attraction, either, so I’m going to sign off before I end up taking out a third mortgage on the house to buy this thing (the bank probably doesn’t know about the other two, anyway).
